SMSC

SMSC at BVGA

We believe our offering of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) educational opportunities at BVGA is outstanding and this was confirmed by Ofsted during their visit in November 2016.

First and foremost, all of our teaching and support staff actively promote SMSC education in lessons.  Such opportunities are included in Schemes of Work across the curriculum and both planned and ad hoc examples can be seen in lessons in all subjects.  Our broad and balanced curriculum, as well as our Votes For Schools programme in Tutor Time, and our Citizenship Days support this.

Outcomes:

  • Our students go on to become thoughtful, considerate and confident citizens with a clear moral sense and a determination to engage with British values, and to contribute positively to the society in which they live, study and work.
  • Preparation for working life is a priority in the academy. Our careers advice and IAG from Year 7 onwards are outstanding.  Sixth Form students complete the Huddersfield University Progression Module to help them to prepare for Higher Education or work.
  • Our NEET figures are always extremely low and many students are the first in their families to go on to Higher Education.
  • They do not follow stereotypical female courses, but study subjects as diverse as Chemical Engineering, Clinical Technology, Dentistry and Chemistry. Enterprise activities and links with business partners encourage students to aim high.

Contribution to British Society:

  • Many students take part in volunteering and fundraising, both within school and beyond. Many of our Year 11 and 12 students take part in the National Citizen Service and we are an NCS Partner School.
  • Pastoral care and work with parents is outstanding. All staff are vigilant and students are aware of a vast range of help available to them
  • Student-led fundraising is outstanding and a very broad spectrum of charities is covered. Students delight in taking part in national charity events such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day.
